A Cookbook That Will Help Beat Cancer!

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

For the second year in the row, my lovely sister Candace is the captain of her Relay for Life team, the Biohazard Babes, at Victoria Hospital. Last year, the team of Paediatric Oncology Nurses raised over $10 000 for the hospital. Quite a feat, seeming as their original goal was $3000 and the team does not have the added advantage of a sponsor! (The hospital can’t sponsor itself.) This year, Candace and her teammates are getting an early start and have created a cookbook to help raise money for her team.

The cookbook is a collection of over 300 of the most scrumptious recipes from the hospital staff, friends and families. It is $15 and is now available. All the proceeds go toward the cancer program (LRCP) at the London hospitals. It makes a great gift and a wonderful Mother’s Day present!

WHAT RELAY IS ALL ABOUT

The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. Relays are overnight events where teams walk, run, or wheel around a track. We Relay to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

WHO ARE THE BIOHAZARD BABES?

“We are Paediatric Oncology Nurses at the Children’s Hospital of London Health Science Centre. On a daily basis we assist our patients and their families as they make their journey from diagnosis to treatment and, in many cases, beat cancer. Unfortunately, the journey is not that easy for all, some may run into complications related to treatment, or lose their battle altogether. We strongly believe that although all of our fighters are strong, they can’t do it alone!”

Candace needs an army of family and friends to help her team raise money for cancer research. She is even looking for people to sell copies from their home or desk at work. Will you forward this message? Facebook it? Will you blog it? Will you help us spread the word? If so, we can help fight cancer and help those who are currently battling it. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

We’re asking for your help and support.

“Give a gift that means something. Give the gift of hope.

Forward this message. Buy a book. Change a life.

Thank you for your support! Have a wonderful day!

News from Dead Mule Swamp: Guest Post and Giveaway

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

Almost everyone has thought of writing a book at one time or another. Inspired by our favorite books and authors, we sit down, pen in hand and just stare at a blank page., thinking , Where do I start? What do I write about? Today, Joan Young joins us with her mystery,  NEWS FROM DEAD MULE SWAMP and shares how she went from Cobbler’s Knob to Dead Mule Swamp.

Anastasia Raven is running from the pain of a failed marriage, and hopes to hide from the world in an old farmhouse she has purchased at the edge of Dead Mule Swamp. When a hundred-year-old newspaper she finds inside a wall is stolen by Cliff Sorenson, and then Cliff disappears, Ana is convinced that the paper holds the key to the mystery. But what old news could be important enough to put Cliff in danger?

From Cobbler’s Knob to Dead Mule Swamp

I’ve been in love with mysteries for at least 55 years. I read my way through the two shelves of kid’s mysteries at the school library several times, and started my own collections of Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Ginny Gordon, and The Hardy Boys.

However, my favorite mystery of that time in my life was Cobbler’s Knob by Eleanor M. Jewett. I must have read it ten times. Last year, I bought a copy and was eager to discover if the story held up in my adult estimation. It did. The elements I loved were all there: a mysterious old house on the seacoast that made strange noises and had a secret room; a courageous girl as the hero; someone who needed help, and a surprising but satisfactory ending.

I’ve spent a lifetime reading and re-reading mysteries. I like almost all of them, but my favorite authors are Rex Stout, Erle Stanley Gardner, Agatha Christie, Lilian Jackson Braun, Sue Grafton, Rita Mae Brown, and probably others I’m forgetting.

The point is, I love mysteries that develop a collection of characters, a fictional world, and present a series of puzzles that need to be solved.

I suppose it was inevitable that I would try to write a mystery. However, I had some reservations. The biggest one was simply personal. I didn’t want to spoil my enjoyment of reading mysteries, and I was afraid that if I analyzed them enough to be able to write them, I wouldn’t be able to disappear into the stories. The jury is still out on this question.

The next question was, “What kind of mysteries would I write?” As it turned out, there’s now a name for them. They’re called cozies, where the emphasis is on a puzzle rather than gore and violence.

Only one issue left, “What kind of hero would I create?” This was tougher. The person had to be someone I could understand and sustain without constant research. Although I like procedural mysteries with lawyers, medical examiners, detectives, etc., I don’t know enough about these non-fiction worlds to write about any of them accurately as an insider.  So, the question became, “What do I know?”

I wasn’t happy with the apparent answer, “Not much.” And that answer wasn’t accurate, but it took me a surprisingly long time to find the actual answer. What I know is the northern outdoors, and small towns.

One long car trip with a broken CD player gave me plenty of time to think up Anastasia Raven and her situation which brought her to Forest County and the edge of Dead Mule Swamp. By the end of that same drive I had thought up basic plots for two books.

It will be up to readers, of course, to decide if Ana is intriguing enough to keep their interest. Meanwhile, I’m having fun dreaming up stories to tell.

Thank you for joining us Joan!

Joan H. Young has been writing stories about the outdoors since the age of 7, when “The Adventures of Skippy the Field Mouse” made its debut. The work survives, but is best left in the box with crayon drawings of squirrels and pressed leaves.

“The Family Christmas,” a seasonal poem made it as far as the local newspaper when she was 12, proving that the serious child was already harboring an evil sense of humor.

As an adult, Joan has made a career of proving that she can bumble through life without ever deciding what to be when she grows up. She began with a degree in Communication Arts with an emphasis on theater. Realizing that drama, for her, was like whiskey to an alcoholic, she left a possible career in stage management for a driven man and 10,000 teenagers. (What was she thinking?) A few years later the couple had legally adopted one of the teens, and two younger children, but were still feeding most of the stray 10,000 teenagers as well. No time there for writing anything except grocery lists, and a journal of the wild ride!

In 1986, still longing for a career in sciences, she went back to school, taking higher math and chemistry in hopes of being accepted into the University of Michigan graduate program. From 1992-1995 she lived in Ann Arbor, and did receive a Masters in Environmental Engineering, cleverly getting U of M to pay for it too! Meanwhile, the writing bug still squirmed, and Joan worked hard at collecting rejection slips from a nice series of reputable magazines and publishers. Also during this time slot she began hiking the North Country Trail (NCT), the longest foot path in the United States.

Now armed with an “advanced degree” she returned home and attempted to establish a reputation as a wetland specialist. Well, she was one, but she wasn’t very good at marketing herself, and when offered a job as a web site manager, that became the next career. Essays about her hikes on the NCT demanded to be written, and friends urged her to publish.

In 2005, /North Country Cache/ made its debut for the 25th Anniversary of the North Country Trail. Since then, more and more of her time has been spent writing. If only more and more money came from that endeavor, it could be called a career!

Recently, she has begun writing more fiction, including several award-winning short stories soon to be published by Twin Trinity Media, and the Anastasia Raven mystery series.

Young has enjoyed the out-of-doors her entire life. Highlights of her outdoor adventures include Girl Scouting, which provided yearly training in camp skills, the opportunity to engage in a 10-day canoe trip, and numerous short backpacking excursions. She was selected to attend the 1965 Senior Scout Roundup in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, an international event to which 10,000 girls were invited. She has ridden a bicycle from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean in 1986, and on August 3, 2010 became the first woman to complete the North Country National Scenic Trail on foot. Her mileage totaled 4395 miles.

Time for Death: Interview and Giveaway with Christie Silvers

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Christie Silvers, author of TIME FOR DEATH, her first book in the Liz Baker series. To learn more about her predictions of the future of epublishing and brick and mortar stores, her creative process and a fantastic giveaway, read on!

Liz Baker thought it would be a normal evening of sex in a cemetery with her beau, until she spotted someone in the distance and all normality in her world ceased to exist. After several murders in her small town, Liz comes to the realization that the murderer is coming after her, and he’s more dangerous than any human could possibly be. With the help of her dead mother, bar bouncer, and cemetery lover, Liz learns that the murdering vampire was sent by her biological father to claim her as his own. Only then does she discover her real parentage and underlying special powers. Only death will release her from Marcus’s powerful hold, but who will die first?

How do you feel about all the bookstores starting to close? Do you think that it is just the corporate ones in trouble? Or do you feel that the small/independent ones are in danger too?

I find it sad that so many bookstores are being forced to close due to economic difficulties.  I once wanted to own my very own bookstore, but I don’t see that in the near future.  I think it’s hard on larger chains as well as the smaller/independent stores.  More people are shopping online and buying e-books.  All physical bookstores are in danger.  That’s just the way of the world now.

Do you think that ebooks have affected bookstores? Or do you think that there are enough people left out there who love to actually have the printed copy to save bookstores?

I do think the popularity of e-books has affected bookstores.  Bookstores are having a hard time right now.  They’re having to change the way they do business and the types of books they offer to their patrons.  I think there are enough people out there to save the independent and small bookstores they love.  If only they would do it.

Is your writing organic or do you plan it out before you create it?

I learn a long time ago that my characters do not like it when I try to plan out their stories.  Anytime I have tried they always run amuck and change everything.  Outlines don’t work with them.  However, I do make notes, write small scenes, keep a list of plot ideas to look at and go over while I’m writing each story.  Some people work better with an outline, but I’m not one of them.

How many hours a day would you say that you spend promoting your writing or others writing?

Some days it feels like I’ve spent all day promoting, but in reality I only spend an hour or two.  And not every single day.  I admit that I probably should promote more, but if the choice comes down to writing or promoting, I’m always going to choose writing.  I do stop what I’m doing and share the work of other authors when I’ve become aware of it.  That might take one of my author friends e-mailing me and asking, “Hey, can you share this for me,” but I’m always happy to help.

Who does your cover art? Do you design it yourself?

My cover designer is the uber-talented Kelly Shorten.  She’s my lifesaver with it comes to cover art.  I might be creative with writing and home DIY stuff, but you can forget about me being able to do visual artwork.  Heck no!  You can find more of Kelly’s work at http://www.facebook.com/kelly.shorten.9

Are you on Goodreads? If so, please share your page address and has it helped you reach more fans?

I am on Goodreads.  I don’t know if it has really helped me to reach more fans, but I’d like to think so.  http://www.goodreads.com/christiesilvers

Do you sell your work in any stores? If so, where?

I don’t know if any stores actually carry my physical books, but I do know that any bookstore can order copies of my books for their patrons.  Just supply them with titles, author name, and ISBNs.

How do you build your character world?

The world in my Liz Baker series is loosely based on my hometown, making it easy to create her world.  I gave it a fictional name, making it easy for me to change anything in her town without offending locals or having someone tell me, “That’s not the name of that road.”  Other authors use cities they’ve been to, lived in, or just Googled.  These days you can find out all you need to know about any city in the world without ever having to set foot on a plane.  I just drive down the street and scope out the location I want to use in my book.  :)

What is your opinion on people who post bad reviews?

As a friend of mine said about a recent nasty reviewer, and I’m paraphrasing here, “A bad review last only minutes, but a bad reviewer has to live with their own nastiness forever.”  Bad reviews will happen.  Not everyone will like everything you like, or write.  That’s life.  It’s the ones who make the reviews personal, spiteful, mean, or leave a bad review without saying why they didn’t like the story that really make me want to scream.  You don’t have to like a book, but at least have a better reason for a 1-star rating other than, “It sucks.”  Blech.

Christie, thank you for joining us!

Game of Thrones Season 2: The North Remembers

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

THE EPIC SERIES RETURNS

GAME OF THRONES

TRAILER:

FINALLY!!

Season 2 of George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy series, Game of Thrones, begins Sunday, April 1st at 9pm ET/MT. The season promises to be more thrilling than the last. This is the only television series that has ever captivated me with such a power that I cannot miss an episode. I recorded all of them on the PVR and was about to watch them again early this month only to learn my husband, Slade, had taped over the episodes to make room for other movies and TV shows.

“You did what?”

(One of my Twitter friends joked that deleting the episodes was like taping over a wedding video. Okay, so maybe it’s not that bad but at the same time…)

Throughout the series, the episodes, the characters are so compelling, the story so gripping, it hooked us from the first episode and the addiction began. Each episode made us want even more. And the way they conclude each episode . . .

Slade was constantly running to the computer after an episode to look up what happens next. Then, he would turn to me with that sly grin, trying to tempt me with the knowledge. I didn’t want to know. I hate spoilers. I’m the kind of reader who will cover the bottom of the page during a climatic scene if I see italics or capitals. BUT, sometimes, he couldn’t resist and as much as I told him to stop, he always managed to slip something through.

I’m sure he’ll be pulling the same stunts this time around.

The series is so good, there are times that Slade and I have watched both the 9pm and 11pm viewings. We just can’t get enough.

At long last, April 1st is here. Once again, we will renew the addiction.

I would love to hear from you!

Who is your favorite Game of Thrones character? Will you be hosting or attending any Game of Thrones parties?

The Most Amazing Amazon Review of Legacies of Talimura: War of the Witch

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

The lovely Cambria Herbert just posted the most amazing Amazon review of my YA fantasy, Legacies of Talimura: War of the Witch. It’s the kind of review every author dreams about reading. A review so passionate about the book, the characters, and the plot. It warms my heart and has motivated Slade and I to work even harder with getting the sequels out. (The Legacies of Talimura series is all mapped out, by the way!) I wanted to share it with you.

“Sixteen year old Astanyx and his two best friends return from a hunting trip to find their small village of Polca ravaged by brutal killers that left no one alive. With nothing left the boys set off to warn the King. They do not realize that they are going to be tested in ways they never thought possible and be thrust into a battle that only could be made up. Except it isn¡¦t made up. It¡¦s real.

Debonair, a powerful witch from the Unspoken Lands is on a secret quest and has put together an army of made up of the most violent and blood thirsty killers she could find. With her army she is terrorizing everyone in her path and creating chaos.

Astanyx and his friends (old and new) must find a way to unite the kingdoms and defeat the witch. To do this he must venture farther than he ever thought, seek answers to forbidden questions and find the only weapon powerful enough to save the kingdoms from Debonair¡¦s desire to unleash an ancient evil.

Buckle your seatbelts¡K

You are about to go for a ride¡K

This book picks you up and sweeps you along until the every last page is read leaving you completely satisfied and even a little winded. That¡¦s right, winded. Legacies of Talimura: War of the Witch is packed full of twists and turns and frankly it¡¦s the best book I have read in a long time.

So what¡¦s it about?

To me, it¡¦s about worlds from long ago when things weren¡¦t as simple as they are now but they were so much more magical. It¡¦s where legend meets history and all creatures come together to create a fantastic world. The descriptions of these places, these lands and villages are so crystal clear in my head it¡¦s as if they really did once exist and they are merely waiting to be discovered again.

I am an avid reader and this is the first tale that I have come across like this. I almost don¡¦t want to make the comparison (even though it isn¡¦t really a comparison) but I can¡¦t help but say what¡¦s on my mind (Hey, you asked). I will admit ¡Vand NO I am not kidding, and yes, you may pretend to not know me if you like ¡V I have never read the Harry Potter series, nor have I watched any of the movies¡Kbut I do have an idea in my head of what it would be like and this book is what I imagine. Not necessarily the story line (there is no sorcerer named Harry with some friends) but the world and the creatures that live in it. There are elves and dwarfs, gnomes and talking wolves¡Kthere are even some dragons.

Astanyx is a great character, my favorite of the story. I love how he is the main character but the story isn¡¦t really about him. It¡¦s about his quest and his journey. He¡¦s a warrior with no training¡K(okay a little training, but mostly by experience) and his sense of self and right and wrong is unshakable. In the beginning of the story he is a boy, unsure of himself and a little awkward. But he doesn¡¦t stay that way for long. He rises up in the most difficult and impossible situations and emerges from the story as a hero and a leader.

As I said, to me the main character of the story was Astanyx but he was far from the only character to capture my attention. Barrett- a strong, capable warrior who I think kind of earned the mentor role to Astanyx was also a favorite. Then there was Luccia, the princess. But she wasn¡¦t like any other princesses in the stories I have read. She has a strong, level head on her shoulder and is capable with a sword. She was always realistic about the situations they faced but still managed to hold on to the hope in her heart. She was a warm ray of sunshine in the middle of a storm.
The villain of the story is vile and power seeking, arrogant and rude. She is also very powerful which makes any victory over her a triumph.

The plot in this book is executed so well and without any hiccups. There is so much depth to the story and so many things happening but I was never once lost or bored. The story moved along continuously and kept me interested and guessing. The characters came up against many challenges and traveled to many places. I would even daresay that sometimes I was reminded of Indiana Jones. º P.S. I really LIKED Indiana Jones.

Which brings me to another point, this book would make an awesome movie. I could see it play out in my head so clearly as I read and the action and battle scenes would be fabulous to watch with some popcorn. And the dragons¡Kthey were awesome.

There was even some romance in the book, but it was something in the background, a nice compliment to the evolving story. It was just enough to make me smile. The ending was fantastic, if a little shocking. I do hope that there will be a sequel because I would love to have more of these characters and this world.

The writing was clear, the description was good and the plot was easy to follow even though it had a lot to offer. In all, this book was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone who loves to read and go on adventures. I would even go as far to say that this is probably the best Indie book I have ever read. I frankly, don¡¦t know why you are still reading this review, you should go buy the book and start reading.

So there you have it. My Opinion.” Cambria Herbert

World of Warcraft: Boneshaker’s Return

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Warcraft: An addiction. A playground. An escape.

To some, it’s more about the community than it is the game. It’s an escape into another world. It’s the ability to experiment with different races, interact with other players, and work together to kill challenging bosses.

The addiction began with the books. Masterpieces so brilliant, I could not help but try the game. The addiction spread like a virus. Minutes turned to hours. The first few levels came quickly, too quickly, and I found myself wanting more. Before I knew it, six hours had passed and the day had turned to night. Grudgingly, I turned myself in, excited for my next day off where I could escape into the world again. But I’m no warrior. I’m barely a blip on the WOW scene. Not yet anyway.

Lately, forums have been asking, “Where is Bone when you need him?”

If you haven’t heard the name, Boneshaker is the name of one of the top DPS Enhancement Shamans in Blade’s Edge. Several months ago, he disappeared off the face of WOW. No one knew what happened to him or where he had gone.

For several months, he remained a ghost. Not a whisper, a message, or the dreaded /gquit. Only silence. His account remained active, yet dormant.

Boneshaker is loyal, supportive, zany. A shaman draenei who can kick some serious ass in a raid. He will stay up late into the night and early morning to help finish off a boss. He is no guild leader, only a warrior at heart who speaks his mind, one who will not stand quietly while he or others are trampled. He loves the game, but he does not live for the game. (You know the kind I speak of. The kind who dominate the guild, demote officers while promoting their own. Or the kind in need of blood pressure medication–or something–while leading a raid screaming, “More DoTs!”)

He is a man who believes himself to have been born in the wrong century. A thousand years ago, he sees himself not as a conqueror, but a strategist. He is a gamer, a husband, a die-hard Leafs fan, and a brilliant storyboarder.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret…

Bone a.k.a. Slade Sewell has been here with me, breathing life into an idea he originally thought out for an RPG. Like Warcraft, Legacies of Talimura: War of the Witch ignites your inner childhood, reaching the young adult audience and beyond. Talimura is a world of magic and adventure, war and tragedy. Fall in love with the cast from Astanyx, Barret, Ramza, and Princess Luccia to the dragons, hellfangs, and the evil Debonair.  Leave the real world behind and enter the world of Talimura where you can take risks, feed your soul, and become anyone you want.

Click on the link Legacies of Talimura: War of the Witch and enter the world of Talimura.

Now that the book has been unleashed to the public, Boneshaker, once again, returns to Warcraft.

If you haven’t met Boneshaker yet, beware. He’s back.
