Intent on tracing their lineage, they descend into a world of lies, fear, ancient myths, and death.  Indian hunters have tracked them to the family compound, Jason is wanted for murders he doesn’t remember committing, and their new-found family is on a mission to kill them.  It seems their only hope for survival is to combine forces with two unlikely allies and trek across the globe to the place where it all began.  Maybe there they can find a way to end it.

In 50 years, what do you want people to think of your work? Guest Post with David Farland

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

Every author wants to be immortal, to leave that imprint on the world, even after our time has passed. Today, New York Times bestselling fantasy author, David Farland, also known as the “Wizard of Storytelling,” shares his passion behind his writing, his latest release, Nightingale,  and even offers a chance to win $1000 in a short-story contest!

Being a YA fantasy author myself, I can’t wait to curl up on my couch with a copy of Nightingale and slip away into a world of adventure. Before I do (because being engrossed in a book, you might not see me for days), I want to thank Dave for joining us here today! I can’t tell you how excited I am that such an icon was kind enough to stop by my little blog. I thought long and hard about what type of guest post I wanted this amazing author to write and even consulted my husband, Slade, about it.

If you only had once chance, what would you ask a New York Times bestselling author?

Here goes nothing!

In fifty years, what do you want people to think of your work?

I’ve gotten many touching fan mails over the years.  When my first novel came out, a man in Canada had his mother dying of cancer in a hospital bed.  To relieve the pain, she would ask him to read a chapter to her here and there, hoping to live long enough to reach the end.  She passed away before the book ended, so he read the last chapters to her at her graveside.

Another reader last spring wrote to tell me that he suffered from a terrible illness and had been on a morphine pump for many years.  He said, “The only time that I was able to forget the pain was when I read your Runelords books.”

At a book signing three years ago, a young man had me sign a Star Wars book that I’d written.  He’d carried the same copy in his back pocket for six years, and stopped to read from it several times per day.  The cover was worn off, and it was held together with duct tape.  I asked him what moved him to do this, and he said, “My mother died when I was eight years old, and for a long time I was very sad.  Then one day I read this book, and for the first time in two years, I realized that I felt happy.  I’ve kept the book with me ever since.”

Entertaining people has merit—just easing their loneliness or pain, bringing them a little light and joy.  That’s valuable for an author to do.

But I want more than that, of course.  When a person reads a novel, sometimes over and over, the story becomes a part of them.  One fan wrote that he’d read one of my books in 1992—three times.  He said, “I was in love with a beautiful girl in college, and I realized the other day that I couldn’t even remember her name.  I couldn’t recall what classes I took that semester in most cases.  But your book became a part of me, burned into my memory.”

So when I write a book, I want readers to feel that they’ve been transported into it.  And when they return to the real world, I want them to feel as if they’ve grown from the experience:  that they understand the world, others, and life itself better.

You see, we write in part to transport, but we write in part to transform.  Despite all the harrowing things that happen in my novels, I want readers to come away feeling that they’re better people for having read them, that the book has a significant positive impact upon them.

If I can bring one profound truth to them, one insight, then I will feel that I’m doing my job.  Ideally, you want something even more.  I want people who read my works to look back and say, “You know, one of my all time favorites was . . .” and name my book.  I want them to give it as a treasured gift to their children or grandchildren.

I think that that my latest novel, Nightingale, has the potential to be that kind of book.

Nightingale tells the story of a young man named Bron Jones, who is abandoned at birth.  Raised in foster care, he’s shuffled from home to home.  At age 16, he’s kind of the ultimate loner.  I think that most of us feel that way at some time.  He’s ejected from one home and sent to a new foster mother, Olivia, a marvelous and gifted teacher.  She recognizes that Bron is something special, something that her people call a “Nightingale,” a creature that is not quite human.

Suddenly epic forces combine to claim Bron, and he must fight to keep from getting ripped away from the only home, family, and girlfriend that he has ever known.  He must risk his life to learn the answers to the mysteries of his birth: “What am I?  Where did I come from?  Who am I?”

I’m releasing the novel in several forms through my new publishing company—as an enhanced novel, as an e-book, an audiobook, and a hardcover.  We even have a fantastic soundtrack for it.  The novel is out now, and my business partner, Miles Romney, did one last cool thing.  The enhanced book was made for the iPad, though you will also be able to read it on just about any other pad or smartphone.  But Miles had his programmers create a web app so that you can enjoy the book on your computer—read a few chapters, take it for a test drive, or simply buy it to enjoy online.  You’re free to go check out the results at www.nightingalenovel.com.  If you like it, remember to “Like” us on Facebook.  Better yet, re-post our site info and tell your friends on Facebook.

Oh, and while you’re there, check out our short-story contest, where you can win $1000.

I hope that in fifty years, when I’m gone, Nightingale will still be read and remembered. That was my goal when I wrote it. Only you and people like you can decide if I’ve achieved that goal.

Bron Jones was abandoned at birth.

Because that’s what his people do.

His foster families found him to be “too gifted” and “strange.”

Because that’s how his people are…

Steel your nerves. You’re about to encounter his people.

Interview with Jeffrey Martin

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

I can’t believe the blog hop is nearing its end. Only a few more days left! But, that means it’s almost time to award all those great prizes! Thanks to everyone who entered the giveaway. If you haven’t yet, you have until the 30th. Don’t miss out on your chance to escape into the worlds of these amazing authors.

With that said, I want to welcome Jeffrey Martin and his thriller, 3:16 here today.

Thanks for joining us Jeffrey!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I attended Hawaii Pacific University earning an Associate of Arts Degree in Psychology. I am a Former Marine and semi-professional football player. I started my Law Enforcement career in 1999. I was a uniformed police officer for a rural municipality in Northeast Iowa. I transferred to a federal law enforcement agency approximately one and half years later. I am the author of thriller, suspense, horror novels and have recently released several digital shorts. My first novel was a thriller entitled, “Lucifer’s Calling”. It was published by Vanilla Heart Publishing in 2008. The follow up “Deadly Demented,” was published in 2009, also by Vanilla Heart Publishing.

“Dead Holiday” was the first short story in the Mark Blankenship series. It was published by Echelon Press in December 2009. In August 2010, the next installment of the Blankenship series Red, White and Blood” was released. “House of Misery,” (2011 Trestle Press) and “Misery Unleashed (2011 Trestle Press) are my latest digital releases. My latest novel, “3:16”, was published 2010 by Cold Moon Press. I’m currently working on my fourth thriller, “Weaving Evil”, and it should be out early 2012.

For most people, an experience with social networking helps them connect with new acquaintances and bridge the gap between long-lost friends. But one man has adopted its resources to fulfill a more sinister agenda.

Brandon Thornley uses the database to search for potential victims as he feeds his thirst for blood. What Brandon doesn’t realize is that someone has accepted his request…and this person is even more ruthless than him.

New Haven Police Detective Patrick Morgan is assigned to investigate a string of ritualistic murders, which leads him to discover that the killer has left behind something valuable.

Armed with the evidence he needs to bring a madman to justice, Detective Morgan sets his sights on his target. Unfortunately for him, he’s not the only one, and his competition will do anything to ensure he fails.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

When I was in elementary school, I spent a majority of my free time, devouring book after book, until I had an idea to create a short story. I showed this simple work of approximately 2500 words to my fourth grade teacher, which was received well by students, and faculty alike. I knew then, possible talent was present in my story telling, and I would create more stories, from that day forward.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I was on a Law Enforcement training exercise, and was injured. When I returned to my home location, I decided, it would be an ideal time to create my first novel, Lucifer’s Calling. I outlined the characters and plot, hoping to entertain the many, who enjoy serial killer novels. The story took on a life of its’ own, and the words poured from me without too much difficulty. Hence, my debut novel was born…hehe!

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

I would consider my mentor would have to be James Patterson. The short succinct chapters were a staple for me, when I decided to create my own work. I enjoy his storylines and the dance between good and evil, and the weaving of subplots that make you want to keep reading. It was my goal to have all my readers feel the same way, when picking up a Jeffrey Martin novel.

Where do you get your ideas for your books?

I’m fortunate to have read a plethora of novels growing up, so I have a wealth of information at my fingertips for plotting out a story and having twists and turns, that will test the reader’s sanity…lol. I barely sleep anymore, because the stories fill my head all the time, and I mean all the time. I will use anything and everything at my disposal for the creation of my work, by that, I mean, people from my “normal” life sometimes tend to wind up in a work…and I know a great deal of people to draw from.

What was your favourite chapter to write and why?

This is a no-brainer for me. It’s definitely from my debut novel, Lucifer’s Calling. The chapter is close to the end of the book, and it places the pieces of “who” Lucifer is and why he is committing these heinous murders. It also shows the killer, was once full of humanity, and was indeed a good person, only to revert to the dark side…(hehe) to become something almost inhuman…

Why do you feel you had to tell this story?

Today, social networking is found virtually almost everywhere. My antagonist uses a networking site, to find potential victims for his horrific hobby. The book shows how the technology of today could be utilized in avenues that are unthinkable…(Well, I sort of thought of it…lol.) But the killer doesn’t realize, his usage of the network could prove to be costly, because someone more ruthless than him, has targeted him for his own sadistic game.

Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

I’m actually working on three at the same time, but I will share my favorite with you. Cupid’s Kill is a story about my three former protagonists, from Deadly Demented, and most recent, Red, White and Blood. Brian Jeffers, Kelli Jordan and Mark Blankenship now all work together for the city of Marcona Police Department.  They have to utilize all their combined knowledge, as a new killer terrorizes the community. He is hunting down all who were involved in the Lucas Calling Serial Murders, as he uses the terrifying paralytic drug, Propaganician to create his own little namesake. Once he has chosen you, death is only a click away!

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

I want to encourage all of you potential authors, to write what you want, not just what sells. It’s important you understand that. If you enjoy writing, work that craft to all your abilities and get involved with others who share the same interests. I hope you’re like me and have to write daily. The gift to create stories which entice should be cherished and respected. Don’t write, because you feel you’re obligated to do so. Write because you can’t help not doing it. I hope that makes sense to all of you out there. Stay true to yourself, and be the writer you want to be. That’s what really matters!

Name five interesting/weird facts about yourself.

1. I started really getting into songwriting when I was approximately fourteen years old. I wrote various songs, and one is even in my debut novel, Lucifer’s Calling.

2. I’m a true work-a-holic, without the twelve step program. I haven’t taken a real vacation in many years, but this year is going to be different.

3. I have recently been watching the True Blood series on DVD. I was never really into vampires, but lately that show has me very intrigued.

4. When I create my stories, the need for heavy, hard rock soothes my soul, and I write like a madman possessed.

5. I have a complete merchandise line of all my novels, ranging from t-shirts to women’s underwear. Yes, I said women’s underwear…lol.

Interview with C.A. Kunz

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Today we have the pleasure of speaking with the mother and son author duo C.A. Kunz and their YA fantasy, The Childe.

Cat Colvin is pretty much your typical run-of-the-mill teenager growing up in the small port town of Astoria. Sure, she is taller than average, has a mane of fiery red hair that is impossible to tame, is left-handed, and has one eye that is sky blue and one that is amber, but that is where the differences end . . . unless you include the minor detail of her slow metamorphosis into the Childe.

We all know how difficult high school can be, and for Cat Colvin it is no different. Except for the fact she has the daunting task of trying to hide her budding Childe traits as they   begin to reveal themselves at the most inopportune times.

This first book in this coming of age fantasy series follows Cat’s life through the twists and turns toward finding out what and who she really is. Come and take the plunge with Cat into a world filled with biting humor, darkness, and yes, a few life lessons as well.

1. Tell us about The Childe.

Carol and Adam: The Childe is a coming of age story with a supernatural twist. Our main character, Cat Colvin, seems like your typical teenager, except for the fact she’s left-handed, redheaded, has two different colored eyes, and doesn’t tan, but hey, everyone has their differences, right? Unfortunately for her, her differences do not end there. Unbeknownst to her, she is also metamorphosing into a Childe. With her freshman year at Astoria High School beginning, Cat not only has to deal with a caustic and very mean math teacher, a Goth clique that has it out for her, and catty girls, but she also has the difficult task of hiding her Childe traits that keep revealing themselves at the most inopportune times.

2. Tell us what it’s like to write as a mother and son duo.

Carol: It has definitely brought us closer together. Living 45 minutes apart, and with Adam working full time, I don’t think I would have seen him as often as I have over the last two years. All in all it has been a wonderful experience, and all the long hours, and hard work has definitely paid off. A side note, Adam didn’t tell me until we were halfway through our first book that he planned on 5 books in this series. I must say I took it very well.

Adam: I really enjoy writing with my mom. It truly has been a wonderful experience, and even though we have had some disagreements throughout the creative process, we were able to resolve them quickly due to our great rapport with one another. It has been quite awesome to live out a dream with my mom by my side. I wouldn’t want to trade this for the world.

3. Why did you choose this title and genre?

Carol: I have always loved the paranormal and supernatural, and when Adam came to me with this idea for a book, I was sold on it immediately. I was so excited that my dream of finally writing a novel was about to come true. Adam had the title and a crude outline of a story when he presented it to me, but I’ll let him answer the rest.

Adam: Well, first of all, I would like to point out that I share the same love for the paranormal and supernatural that my mom does. I can’t imagine writing about anything else at the present time that didn’t have some element of the paranormal in it. I grew up reading Goosebumps, Fear Street and watching shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, so I always surrounded myself with this kind of material.

The title, The Childe, came about after scouring the internet for a word that meant something we can’t reveal here, because that would give away the whole basis of our first novel. What I can say though, is that a Childe is a being we’ve kind of created by taking that word’s definition and twisting it to fit into the context of our story. Also, we find that the way Childe is spelled, makes it eye catching and has people looking twice because of the e at the end of it (which not a lot of people are used to seeing it spelled that way).

4. Who are your writing influences?

Carol: Old horror movies, like Dracula, Halloween and even Alfred Hitchcock.

Adam: I would have to say R.L. Stine has had a huge influence on my writing ever since I was a little kid. I was always fascinated by his stories, both for young kids, and for young adults. Some other authors would be J.K. Rowling and Stephen King. Actually J.K. Rowling pretty much single-handedly rekindled my love of reading and writing because of her wonderful story about a boy wizard. I also think that my love of all things horror (movies, television, and books) reflects in my writing as well.

5. What similarities do you find between yourself and the protagonist?

Carol: It’s funny, I always describe myself as not normal because I’m redheaded, left-handed, and I don’t tan. Of course it’s been a while since I was 15 years old, but Adam wrote the chapter where Cat is described and that’s how he wanted to describe her.

Adam: Like Cat, I try to be the best friend I can be, and treat everyone like I want to be treated. She is also a very strong character, and I perceive myself as strong since, like Cat, I don’t really let people walk all over me. I would also say that I am sarcastic, and can be a touch snarky, just like Cat is in our novel.

6. What about you do you see in the antagonist?

Carol: I think of myself sometimes as being too nice, so being able to develop evil characters is exciting. I would never dream of hurting anyone but through my characters I can make them bad, and then hopefully I will make them pay for it in the end.

Adam: I would agree with my mom and say that writing for evil characters is a lot of fun, especially if you, yourself, are not that way in real life. It’s almost like you want to make them so evil that people hate them and can’t wait to see them get theirs. We all have a little dark inside of us, but unlike our antagonist, I would never act on it.

7. Where do you get your ideas?

Carol and Adam: This series is pretty much a combination of all of our loves. Horror, comedy, magic, paranormal beings, slight teen angst/romance, all of that. We get most of our ideas though from everyday life, things that we know. Almost all of our characters are modeled after our best friends or family members. One in particular though, Maude Roberts, was fashioned somewhat after the character Gladys Kravitz from Bewitched.

8. How do you market your books?

Carol and Adam: Book signings are our favorite way. We love to interact with others, and they’re always a great time. As far as the internet goes, we use Facebook, our blog, Goodreads, and Twitter. Twitter is actually something we hadn’t really looked in to until we had a conversation with a wonderful author, Tiffany King, at a local book signing. She told us it had been an awesome tool for her, and one of the best parts was the interacting with interesting and supportive people. We’ve found this to be so true. Nearly everyone we have come in contact with has been so helpful by giving us tips, and helping promote our book. This is actually our first blog hop, and we can’t thank you enough for inviting us to join you.

9. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Carol: I am an avid reader, and no, I don’t only read paranormal. Some of my favorite authors are James Patterson, J.D. Robb, and Janet Evanovich, just to name a few. I’m also addicted to Twitter, so I spend several hours a day tweeting to our new friends.

Adam: When I am not writing, I am most likely working at my job as a décor consultant for a major theme park in the Orlando area. I also enjoy hanging out with friends, going to the movies, playing videogames, reading (of course), and being crafty by creating things.

10. If you could have a paranormal power or be a certain creature, what would it be? (Sorry, love this question so had to steal it. ;)

Carol: There are so many choices, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be a Childe. And of course, to find out what that is, you will have to read the book…sorry.

Adam: Even though there are no dragons in our story, I would have to say that I would love to be a dragon shifter. I think it would be super cool to be a human that can transform into a dragon at will. It’s odd though because I have a fear of heights, but I want to be a creature that can fly…figure that one out, haha.

11. What gives you joy?

Carol: Making people smile. And to help with that, I give out happy face pennies to strangers that make me smile. You never know what that little item can do for someone. Of course the most joy I get is from my family, friends, and my four-legged doggies, there are three of them!

Adam: Many things give me joy. My family, friends, work, writing, reading, chatting with people, and soooo much more.

12. Are there any other projects you’re both currently working on?

Carol & Adam: We are currently wrapping up the 2nd book. It is actually in the hands of our second editor as we type this! We’re also working on a side project with the wonderfully talented musician, Lee Wilson. He is helping us put together a companion soundtrack for our series. Volume one of the soundtrack spans the first two books in The Childe series, and will contain 11 (or more) full length songs. The songs have full lyrics and were inspired by the words of the novels. They span several genres from pop, rock, r&b, punk, classical and country. The first two singles “Amber” and “I Am What I Am” are actually available now on iTunes and the Amazon MP3 store. You can listen to both of them on our blog as well. The entire soundtrack will be available soon.

Interview with Lenore Wolfe

Monday, July 11th, 2011

The second week of our blog hop, kicks off with Lenore Wolfe and her novel, DOORWAY TO THE TRIQUETRA.

Tell us about your latest release, Doorway to the Triquetra.
Doorway of the Triquetra is about a young woman who learns she is the next Jaguar Witch to carry the ancient medallion and carry on the legacy of the Jaguar People. But she carries an extra burden. Her past lives are all tied to her, as the Queen of the Jaguar People shortly after the days of Atlantis. She is the one, with one other, who will be revealed in Book Two, who must access the stone that is the heart of Mother Earth, and which has been hidden in the Land of the Fae since the fall of Atlantis. She is the one who must reunite the human race with their brothers the Fae, and bring change of the transitional Children of Atlantis during, around, and after, the Myan year of 2012.

Why did you choose your title and genre?

The Doorway of the Triquetra is the doorway in the land of the Fae, she must learn to cross to reunite with the Mother.

What inspired you to write this book?

The stories of the Indigo and Crystal Children online :)

What element of the story did you enjoy writing the most and why?

I enjoyed, surprisingly, writing about Lucius, even more than Micah. I enjoyed the idea
of Mira becoming reunited with her past lives, regaining her memories, and reuniting with past loves. The 2nd book will bring out a lot of depth and nuances of these relationships. I have had a couple of people who wished she would have grown up quicker, and explore these relationships sooner, but I don’t want her to mature into womanhood too soon, nor do I want her to become a warrioress over night. There are a lot of sequential books coming up, at least 12, and I will be releasing at least two of these a year.

What author or books have influenced you the most?

My great grandmother’s, great aunt, Harriett Beecher Stowe, because I realized at a very young age, the power of a story to move a nation.

How do you market your books?

Right now, all online, Indie style, through blogs, sites, guest posts, social sites, like Twitter and Facebook, and self-publishing sites, such as, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords, and soon, Completely Novel and Borders. But I need to learn to slow down. I’m going too fast. My plate is too full, too much of the time. I need to develop friendships and work with people, because the people are much more important than any one writer, or any one book. And by always racing to get things done, I’m missing the opportunities placed in front of me, to really work with great people.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on The Fallen One. This is not a fallen angel book. It’s about a man, a werejaguar, one of the Jaguar People, who was forced to transition too young, to protect himself and his sisters from gangs, and who must deal with the fallout from this, in dealing with the monster he has become, versus the man he wishes to be.

She has been raised to use these powers to help the human race. They both
hunt the monsters of the night, but for different reasons. She does so to
protect the innocent. He does so to bury the hell he can’t quite free
himself from. Now, she must weigh in with herself, with her love for him,
against the things he’s is capable of doing to kill what haunts him.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?

Going outside :) Painting, sculpting.

If you could have a paranormal power or be a certain creature, what would it be?

A Jaguar shapeshifter. I have always been drawn to the big cats:)

Why did you pick the antagonist you did in Doorway of the Triquetra?

I am fascinated with the spirit realm and the idea of the different nuances that
take me in a different direction than the general idea of the Christian Devil. From there, the ‘what if’ game takes me down some amazing roads. I was toying with the three places that carry their own flag, and considerable power. The United States has the one in the District of Columbia, which is the seat of military power The Vatican carries one, and is the Power of the Church. And the third is in London. ‘What if’ the Christian idea behind a
dark power is a force we follow blindly, one of which slaughtered a nation of Native Americans by branding them the heathens. The idea of Xavier Dubioux, and even the man behind the mask, in my first novel, is built on this idea, and even, some, on the idea of the Free Masons, which our entire government has been a part, since Washington on down.

From the seeds of these ideas, spring many ideas for bad guys to come:)

Thanks for having me Angel:)

Interview with Katie M John

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Please welcome Katie M John and her YA Fantasy, FOREST OF ADVENTURES. To learn more about this talented author, her inspiration, next book, and even her book crushes, read on!

For seventeen year old Mina Singer, falling in love with an Arthurian Knight on a white horse was never part of the plan – especially being that she’s an ordinary college girl living in the twenty first century.
As Mina finds herself catapulted into a land she believed only existed in the bedtime stories of her childhood, she soon discovers that Fairyland is not quite as innocent as she imagined.

The question is…who will come out alive?

Haunting, beautiful and sexy, The Forest of Adventures, is a dark romantic quest into the land of true and forbidden love.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I live in the suburbs of London with a handsome giant and a 3ft mudpuddle Fairy. I write dark fairytales and gothic horror. Apart from this I am perfectly normal – honest!
I teach English at a London Comprehensive school and love spending my days talking about books and the English Language. I love music, old things and art – I paint in my spare time (which isn’t much with all the above going on!)

Tell us about Forest of Adventures.
The Forest of Adventures is #1 of a trilogy called The Knight Trilogy. http://www.theknighttrilogy.com. Set in Cornwall, UK, it is about a seventeen year old college student called Mina Singer. Her life is pretty ordinary until the arrival of the mysterious and devestatingly handsome, Blake Beldevier. She falls in love with him, despite already being in a relationship with her childhood sweetheart. Her love for Blake tears apart everything she has ever known and she finds herself catapulted into a world which she only believed existed in fairytales.

Why did you choose your title and genre? What inspired you to write this book?

The genre and title kind of chose me. The title is a direct quote from Mallory’s Morte de Arthur which was a major influence in this very contemporary, reworking of Arthurian legends. I love YA fiction – the way that fantasy and reality blur – in just the way they do in adolescence. This genre allows you an element of freedom which you perhaps don’t get in general fiction.

What element of the story did you enjoy writing the most and why?
I loved writing the characters – they’ve been with me a very long time. It’s quite strange how they have become like any other ‘real’ individual in my life. Forming and shaping the characters has been very rewarding and I feel quite paternal towards them.

What author or books have influenced you the most?
I love the works of Poe, Lovecraft, Shelley, Keats and the Bronte’s. More contemporary writers who have influenced my work are Maggie Stiefvater and Stephanie Meyer. They taught me the importance of story telling over ‘intellectualism’ – by that I don’t mean they are not clever or beautifully worded, but these writers grounded me and made me think on the idea of giving a story as a gift.

How do you market your books?
In any way I can think of. I have a website, blog, twitter, facebook page, goodreads page. I do giveaways of books and merchandise. Getting into best selling categories on Amazon.UK is also powerful because it pushes your work under the noses of browsers. This has probably had the biggest sales effect.

What are you working on now?
At this moment I am finalising the last edits of #2 which is called Immortal Beloved. Book 3 is also sketched out. However, very excitingly I am  starting ‘proper’ work on Beautiful Freaks – a stand alone YA Gothic Horror, set in London during the Victorian period. Kaspian Blackthorne is the protagonist. He introduced himself to me last week and to be frank – he’s started stalking me. I’ve found myself having several conversations with him this week.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
Dancing and playing with my daughter, reading, painting, cooking and chilling out.

If you could have a paranormal power or be a certain creature, what would it be?
To never sleep; I’d love to be able to find more hours in the day to write and read. If I could be a certain creature, I am afraid that it would have to be vampire, I love the whole aestheticism and beauty attached to the myth. A siren would also be pretty cool.

My book crushes:
Mr Darcy, Heathcliff, Hamlet, Edward Cullen, Blake Beldevier, Dorian Gray.

Interview with Reena Jacobs

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

It’s a pleasure to welcome Reena Jacobs and her paranormal romance novel, SHADOW CAT. To learn more about her inspiration and upcoming books, read on!

Tell us more about yourself.

I’m a daydreamer. If the world was on my schedule, I’d lounge around a good portion of the day just thinking and daydreaming my life away. Lucky for me, I have a family who needs me to be functional and productive; otherwise I’d get nothing done.

Tell us more about Shadow Cat.

It seems like forever since I’ve talked about my debut novel, but in reality, I
probably talk about Shadow Cat every day. Haha Shadow Cat is a paranormal romance set in the Malaysian rainforest. How about a blurb?
Eric Randall’s plan is simple-fix the mess his researchers have created in Malaysia, experience the pleasures the country has to offer, and return to the comforts of America. All it takes is one beautiful aborigine, and Eric finds himself stranded in a world of Malaysian myths and legends.   A novice shaman amongst her people, Berani is free and independent. Yet all is not well in her homeland. Demons prey on her people, pushing them to extinction. When a strange speaking man invades her forest, she has one more worry to add to her already troubled life. Attraction or no, she will fight Eric tooth and claw to maintain her freedom. But will she destroy herself in the process?   If Berani wishes to save her family… if Eric wishes to reclaim his old life, they must stand together against the threats of encroaching wehr-tigers and bloodsucking demons… or perish.

What inspired you to write this book?

It all started back in 2008. I realize psychology wasn’t for me and dropped out of my PhD program to search for a job. In the meantime, I decided to fill my time with writing a book. I love shape-shifter romances but wanted to do something other than werewolves. But what? Since I’m a wild cat lover, I decided to go with tigers. One thing led to another, and a year later I was typing “the end” on Shadow Cat.

Why did you choose this genre and the title of your book?

My favorite genre at the time was paranormal romances, so I figured I start with what I enjoyed. The title-Shadow Cat. If you don’t mind, I’ll forgo that question to avoid spoilers. Instead, let’s talk about the subtitle: The Striped Ones. When I was researching Shadow Cat, I came across Malaysian folklore regarding weretigers. Some believed using the term ‘weretigers’ would attract the creatures’ attention. Instead, they used the term orang belang which means ‘the striped ones.’

How does this book describe you? How does it express your thoughts?

For the most part, I just wanted to write a book I wanted to read with the hope others would also enjoy the story.

What similarities do you find between yourself and the protagonist?

Eric, the hero, can be quite hypocritical in his actions. I’m not ashamed to admit, I have strong opinions, but I don’t always do what’s right in my eyes. I don’t let myself off the hook though. I acknowledge my shortcomings. As for Berani, the heroine, she has a tough façade. She’s independent, but deep down she wants someone she can trust and depend upon. I’m so like that. I hate showing weakness, but at the same time, would like to relax my guard and feel safe enough to be vulnerable.

What about you do you see in the antagonist?

In Shadow Cat, Eric and Berani are more antagonistic to themselves than outside forces. For me, there’s always a bit of dissonance between who I want to be and who I am.

Where do you get your ideas?

Everywhere!

How do you market your book?

I’m horrible at marketing but use social media mostly: Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, blogging. I’ve also spent a bit of time seeking reviews. I don’t think anyone has developed a true formula. Luck plays an important role in getting the word out.

What do you think about the future of ebooks?

Oh man. That’s a broad question. All in all, I think the prospects for ebooks are favorable. I imagine eBooks will be to print as the iPod is to CDs.

What are you working on now?

My current work in process is a new adult story called I Loved You First. I’m hoping to release it in August 2011. In fact, I’m trying out a Kickstarter campaign for it now. I’ve been playing a bit with a blurb:

Alexandria (Alex) Carmichael guards two secrets close to her heart. One–she’s in love with her best friend, Seth. Two–he’s gay.  As a freshman in college, Alex looks forward to fun times with her best friend. When Seth decides cycling through girlfriends is the way to fit in with the straight crowd, Alex must make a choice: watch Seth give his affection–though phony–to another while her heart breaks or come clean with her feelings and risk losing his friendship forever.

I have the first unedited chapter available on my blog.

Add a question of your choice. (Get creative with this one :) You’re stuck in solitary confinement with one book to get you through the lonely days. Which one do you have on hand?

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I took a women’s history course in college and was forced to read it. I laughed. I cried. I related. As torturous as reading the same book over and over would be, that’d be the one to get me through.

Thanks for having me, Angel.

Reena Jacobs is just your typical writer who loves to see her words in print. As an avid reader, she’s known to hoard books and begs her husband regularly for “just one more purchase.” Her home life is filled with days chasing her preschooler and nights harassing her husband. Between it all, she squeezes in time for writing and growling at the dog.

Author Interview: Haresh Daswani

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

To kick off the international blog hop, I would like to introduce Haresh Daswani and his short story collection, EVOLUTION OF INSANITY. To learn more about Haresh and the inspiration behind his book, read on!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am an entrepreneur in the field of environmental solutions, an Executive Vice President for JCI Fort Bonifacio Taguig City, a columnist for National Free Press, and many more random things I do out of boredom and curiosity.

Tell us about Evolution of Insanity.

Evolution of Insanity is a collection of short stories revolving around the thoughts of the author, seeing sanity in the insane, the insanity in the sane. It questions, twists, destroys, and dissects ones thoughts on reality, rediscovering taboos and questioning them, and thus liberates one’s thoughts to see things in a completely different perspective that one would never have thought about.

Why did you choose the genre and title of your book?

The book, more than ever, is an evolved concept of writing wherein the
choice of words paint the picture and is to be felt, the structure and
emphasis are put in specific places to be able to deliver not only the
tangible message, but the intangible as well. Experimental literature
marries the less common, and oftentimes completely revolutionary style of
writing to be brought to fruition.

What was your favourite chapter to write and why?

I enjoyed writing White Lines because it was a start of my cementing a new
evolved phase in writing. It has refined a lot of my concepts, and has a
stronger, confident voice.

Why do you feel you had to tell this story?

Because everyone is obliged to share their thoughts, concepts, and whatever
wisdom one has to the world to be looked into, refined, and evolved.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Enjoy writing, as good food can be tasted from the hands of a cook who
enjoys cooking, writing can be tasted the same way.

How do you market your book?

Right now it is scattered, but focused on gathering more reviews.

What are you working on now?

Whatever new short stories I can conjure and share.

Why did you decide to publish independently?

Mainstream publishers will want to edit the book.  It will lose its essence
if that is done.

How do you describe yourself through your book?

The book is an expression of my thoughts, of my certain characters, where I
do not need to apologize and where I can experiment. My writing is meant to
help others think rather than follow, it gives light to previous thoughts,
and sees the sanity in all that is insane.

Guest Post with Harry Nicholson: Tom Fleck

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Today, I want to welcome Harry Nicholson and his novel, TOM FLECK. In this guest post, Harry talks about the unique inspiration behind his historical adventure.

About the Author:

Whitby (UK) writer, Harry Nicholson, published his first novel in January 2011.

After careers as a merchant navy radio officer and in television studios, Harry retired to concentrate on art, poetry and teaching meditation.

He was born in Hartlepool where his family have fished since the 16th century and it is in that century that his novel, Tom Fleck, is based.

Harry’s piece on how and why the novel was written:

‘Tom Fleck’.

The story of an unknown man.

Do we ever wonder about our distant forefathers and mothers, those who lived before our great-grandparents, and even before their great-grandparents? What can we know of them? Beyond even our parent’s parents there is sadly just white fog – for most of us.

We can penetrate the fog a little. Family history research has never been more popular. Folk beaver away through the mass of data now on the internet. But what does it yield? Seldom more than the bare bones of names and the dates of baptisms, marriages and burials, and those only if you are lucky and persistent. Personality is not found; we don’t see tears or hear cries of joy, there are no flushed cheeks and beating hearts. No whisperings in the night time.

A few scraps of bone we might find here and there, as we search back through time – but then we reach a solid wall. That barrier is the darkness before the start of parish registers (in England, 1566). This is the end of the search for our ancestors – unless they were aristocrats or notorious rebels.

I’ve trodden this way, back to a mysterious ancestor: Lancelot Horsley (probably a fisherman). In 1573, he buried his first wife and two infants, then remarried and had two healthy sons. That is all I’ll ever know of him; his beginnings are on the far side of that barrier, so there is not a single mark on parchment to show that his parents ever existed.

But what if I write a story? A story about the life and times of people perhaps two generations before Lancelot? I can research how the ordinary folk of his district lived, how they spoke, what they believed to be true, and how events beyond their control swept them along. Why not? So I went for it!

One rare name stepped forward from the Hartlepool records and caught my attention – a little family called Fleck. I imagined their great-grandfather as a Thomas Fleck, a humble farm labourer. He would be a young man in a formative year. 1513 was the year of the Battle of Flodden, a conflict that gave rise to the haunting Scottish lament: “The Flowers of the Forest are a’ wede away”. Fine – so how could I contrive a situation where the humble Tom Fleck would have to leave his kindred and re-discover himself in the midst of international struggles beyond his comprehension?

First, I built his world from scraps of social history and old maps, give him personality and a family, give him troubles and yearnings, give him turning points, cross-roads, loves and enemies – and hard choices. All this in order to try to understand how some of our ancestors might have walked the land.

It is done. A whole generation has come alive. They walk and run through the pages and I love them all – even the villains.

An introduction:

‘Sharp as quivering hares are the Flecks. We’ve eyes and ears for things other folk miss.’

Much later, in the aftermath of Flodden, a young man finally understands his father’s words.

The year: 1513. The place: North-East England.

Tom Fleck, a downtrodden farm worker but gifted archer, yearns to escape his masters. He unearths two objects that could be keys to freedom: a torque of ancient gold and a Tudor seal ring. He cannot know how these finds will determine his future.

Rachel Coronel craves an end to her Jewish wanderings. When the torque comes to rest around the neck of this mysterious woman, an odyssey begins which draws Tom Fleck into borderlands of belief and race.

Here are Tudor kings and their nobles – their documented lives are rich material for writers – but now they play a minor part. This is the story of Tom Fleck, a penniless farm labourer, who shares his dwelling with cattle. He is fictional only because he leaves no record – his people live before the keeping of parish registers, so they make no marks on parchment and are lost to history.

We find his rare surname in the register of St. Hilda’s church at Hartlepool:

Baptisms 1596, September 19th : Christofer, ye child of Willm. Fleck.

Perhaps William heard tales of how his great grandfather, Thomas, loved a strange woman and stood with the army on the terrible battlefield of Flodden. This story brings him to life.

The novel is in paperback and Kindle. For more details, and to read Chapter 1, please call at my blog: http://1513fusion.wordpress.com/1513-a-novel/

Angel — thank you for the gracious invitation to write here.

My best wishes to all of you, and thanks for reading.

Harry Nicholson
